Death of a co-worker: A letter to my friend

I know it’s been a while since we last saw each other. Yet, you have remained in my thoughts since leaving work. I think of you especially when I buy a cup of coffee. I remember when I would come to work with all my bundles and bags of teacher materials, and of course, coffee. You would give me this grumpy look and say, “So you can buy coffee for yourself and not for me? Okay Dara, I see ya!” At first I thought you were serious and I endlessly apologized to you. “Okay, tomorrow I will buy you a cup of coffee. How do you like it?”

You never actually told me how you like your coffee. All you would say is, “It is okay Dara, I’m just messing with you.” We’d laugh and then I ask about your day. Although it was early evening, it always seemed like your day had just started. Maybe that’s because you had to stay until closing. Maybe because you were the director of the after school programs, or it was an excuse to pick on me about not buying you coffee.

There were some days you weren’t in a joking mood. “What’s wrong?” I would ask you. I could always tell when you were aggravated or really upset. When you were aggravated, you would just yell, “I don’t know Dara!” and mumble some words I didn’t understand. When you were really upset, you would say “Fuck this shit!” It's those days I was most concerned about you. You would sit at your desk, quietly, staring at the computer. You wouldn’t even turn around to say hello. When my class ended and I’d say good night, some nights you’d say the same or wouldn’t say anything at all. One night, I patted you on your shoulder and said, “It’s going to be alright. Trust me.” That’s when you turned around and smirked at me, “Really?” I smiled back, “Yes. Whatever that’s bothering you will pass. Now who do I need to kick for ya?” You laughed and said, “Everybody!”

Do you remember how we met? I was a new teacher at this new location, your location. I was about to walk up the stairs to my classroom when you stopped me half way. “Where are you going?” You looked annoyed and I instantly felt intimidated. “I have a class on the second floor. I’m supposed to be starting a class tonight.” You seemed uninterested and looked at me as if my response wasn’t good enough. I smiled and said, “My name is Dara Fulton. I am an ESL teacher and I’m starting a level 1 class tonight. I work at the Manhattan office but was sent here to teach.” There was an awkward silence for a while until you said, “Okay. Do you know what room you’re in?” As I said yes, you started to walk pass me. I quickly asked, “Oh, what is your name?” You glanced back at me with an abrupt answer, “Brian.”

From that moment on, I liked you. I don’t know why. You weren’t that friendly. You were abrupt majority of the time. At times you questioned my ability to navigate my way around the school; it was a big school. And sometimes you would ignore me when I greet you. I think the ice breaker was that evening when you asked me about coffee. The next time the coffee discussion came up was the last Spring I saw you. I was sitting on the steps in front of the school. I arrived an hour early before class. It was a nice day, the sun was out and it was breezy. I liked sitting on the steps and watch people walk by. I also enjoyed seeing my students arrive to school. You came outside. I had my head down reading a book and listening to music on my iPod.

“Oh so I guess you can’t say hello to nobody!” I looked back and there you were smiling at me.” I said, "Oh please! Like you always say hello to me!” We laughed as you started to light your cigarette. I added, “And I honestly didn’t see you standing there!” You puffed on your cigarette and said, “Yeah right Dara! Of course you didn’t!” You asked me how I was, and next minute I knew it was time for me to head inside. It seemed like in that short amount of time we talked about each other’s day, our frustrations, concerns, happy moments, and pretty much anything that came to mind. You smiled more that day. Despite your usual frustrations, you seemed calm. You didn’t curse much. When I jokingly offered to kick someone for you, you said, “Nah…it is okay Dara. I appreciate the offer.” I felt happy.

On my last day of class and as an employee at our agency, you stood in the lobby watching my students hug me and say, “We will miss you teacher.” I saw you watching, but couldn’t look at you. A couple of my students offered to walk me to the train station. As they were walking outside I told them to give me a few minutes. I turned back. The security gentleman gave me a hug and I wished him well. As I turned to you, you said, “Don’t Dara.” I smiled at you while holding back tears. “I want to thank you for being you. Thank you for always looking out for me and for believing in me. I appreciate you more than you know, and I will truly miss you.” I don’t remember what you said immediately after that. I just remember hugging you and you saying, “You will be missed.” I said my goodbyes and before I walked out the door, you yelled out, “And don’t be a stranger Dara.” I smiled at you and said, “I promise, I won’t.”

That was the last time I saw you.

A colleague and friend of mine who used to work with you, called me the other day. I haven’t spoken to her in a long time. In fact, I haven’t spoken to anyone from our agency. Although I never spoke to you about all that was going on in 2012, I think deep down inside you already knew. As we were talking, she told me you had passed away. For a moment I thought I went deaf, because I didn’t want to believe you were gone. She said you died in 2015 around the spring time. I had no idea you were not well. I told her I was sorry to hear of your passing, but it didn’t hit me until now. It’s like God told me you were really gone, and I had to accept that.

I owe you an apology Brian. I didn’t keep my promise. I stayed away for my own reasons. It had nothing to do with you. I should have kept in contact with you, stopped by the school to say hello. I should have brought you that cup of coffee. I feel guilty for not bringing you that cup of coffee. That is my biggest regret and I hope you will forgive me.

As I write this letter, I am holding back tears. It’s just like the day when I last saw you. I’m not ready to say goodbye, but instead say I’ll see you later. That’s how I like to remember you. I want to know that I will see you again and hear you say, “What’s up Dara?” as you light your cigarette and vent about life. Most of all, I want to remember your smile. That I will always cherish. I’ll see you later my friend.

Rest in peace Brian.

I’m Back!!!!

Hello friends of the Creative Corner! I know it’s been a long time since I wrote on here. 2016 was an interesting yet reflective year. Happy New Year 2017. I am grateful to be here and be back to writing. I missed it. It’s something about typing words on a blank page that satisfies me. Blogging is cool and I enjoy it. When I get to share reflective moments in my life, inspiration, or poems, I feel empowered knowing people are reading my words, my inner thoughts, getting to know who Dara is. I thank you for being here.

Did you know that as of December 2016, Dara’s Creative Corner blog made 6 years? Wow. Here’s to another 6 years!

So what’s been going on with me? Hmm…how can I say this in a few sentences? I am working hard towards my dreams and goals which includes getting my book published. I am still creating. My design, “Squiggly lines, dots, and whatever else” is now copyrighted (YAY) and I have an artist blog on Tumblr (darasunbubbles.tumblr.com). I am still unemployed (Boo!!!) but now focusing on other ventures. Shh…it’s a secret for now. I am single…again. I broke up with my ex-boyfriend days after my 35th birthday. It’s sad and still have love for him… sigh, that’s life. I tried the dating scene. That’s a story in itself! Oh and I recently discovered 3 gray hairs on my head. Stress perhaps or a sign that I’m getting older? Whatever it is, I learned a lot about myself, I learned a lot about love in 2016. Now that it’s over, what lies ahead for me in 2017?

Creative me aka DaraSunbubbles

My outdated video camcorder and makeshift "studio" :)
One of the ways I deal with life’s many ups and downs is by being creative. I like to call myself a collective, because I like to do many things and I have many interests. I love to write, I love to teach ESL (English as a Second Language), and love to create (crafting, drawing, photography). My art is me. I call it DaraSunbubbles Art. Another interest I’ve always had is talking and helping people. Since I’m always told “You talk too much,” I thought why not make a career out of it…well, somewhat. I revamped my YouTube channel during the Christmas holiday. I posted 5 videos varying from getting to know me, why I decided to return to YouTube, cooking, and inspirational messages. I welcome you to check out my channel, Dara K. Fulton. It’s similar to this blog except you get to watch my big head talk, ha ha! www.youtube.com/dkirstene

Goals for the Creative Corner and YouTube channel

The goal for both this blog and my YouTube channel is to share and offer inspiration to people. I truly believe in the power of inspiration, because it helps build confidence, self-esteem, and gives one hope. Life can be hard at times, and it’s a good feeling to know that you are not alone. Oftentimes, I feel alone especially when I get depressed. When that happens, it can make one (me) isolate self from people which can make the situation worse. It’s no secret that I’ve had my share of ups and downs, and I expressed them here. When I started this blog in 2010, it was right after I lost my job, my boyfriend, and found out I needed hip surgery. I lost friends in the process, became depressed, and dealt with emotions I didn’t think existed. I channeled all my energy into this blog as an escape to find solace within myself. Over time, the more I shared the more people were touched by what I was saying. Maybe I was giving them something and didn’t know it. I may never know. What I do know is, I truly enjoy sharing inspirational and reflective moments with you. It’s sharing a part of me that I don’t get to do in person (or shy away from). I find it easier to share these elements with you here. It gives me peace.

I welcome you to join me on this creative journey. I’m confident that you will gain something from it whether it’s on camera or on this blog. I welcome comments or a simple hello (my contacts are in the “Get to know me” bio). I look forward to a great 2017. I believe this will be the year that DREAMS WILL BECOME A REALITY. Believe in it. Strive for it. Keep going.

Always stand tall.

War

Author’s note: I was inspired to write this poem during the recent events that occurred in the U.S. and abroad. This includes but not limited to the Dallas,Texas police shootings, racial tensions, the bombings in New York City and New Jersey, and the violence in Turkey, France, and all around the world. It moved me. It made me mad. It made me cry. So, I drew a picture. Then I decided to write a poem about it.

Pow pow, boom boom
Every one runs in a cloud of heavy gloom
Set off by bombs and gun fire
Running to safe ground is the only desire
People afraid, unable to say
To describe or feel about what happened today
Police make many efforts, protestors take a stance
Communication is lost
Will there ever be a second chance?
Wounded soldiers are the everyday folk
Victims of a world that’s suffered a stroke
Broken and unaccounted for
Senseless violence has no cure
Blood soaks city pavements
Shattered glass and concrete are its only remnants
Death may lie beneath the surface

But terror haunts the living conscious

Blooming Dara

Happy April friends! I know it’s been a minute since I posted on the Creative Corner and there are tons of reasons for that. However, instead of boring you with tedious details, I rather give you a snapshot of what’s been going on in my world. Since my last post which was April 2015 (a year flew by already, wow!), so many things have happened from artistry, travel, to falling in love…yeah it’s been a cool journey thus far. Many have asked me about my book project, Life’s Reflective Twists. I put it on hold to focus more on my art work and develop into a full-fledged artist if there is such a thing! Since putting the book on hold and the events that occurred after, I have more materials to add to my story. So, I’m back to the revising stage or as I like to think of it, the fun stage. It’s my hope to have it completed and off to be published by year’s end. That would certainly put a smile on my face.

I titled this post “Blooming Dara,” because like a flower, I believe I am blooming more into my womanhood. I am more set in my ways, and comfortable in the skin I am in. The trials and tribulations of life still exists. I still struggle. I’m still unemployed and continue to look for work. Yet, I have a better handle on things than I did in years’ past. When faced with adversity, one must learn how to look within self to cope, to keep going, and smile when you don’t feel like it (that is the hard part). I continue to smile and when necessary look in the mirror and tell self, “You are beautiful. You are smart. You got this.”

So what has changed since 2015?

For starters, I’m about to embark on a new age. I’ll turn 35 on April 22nd, a milestone indeed. I am comfortable to call myself an artist, because I honed in on the type of art I like to create. I love it so much that I am venturing into the entrepreneurship world. Wow. Just staying that gives me goosebumps! I’m still an ESL teacher, because every day I meet a new person or store clerk whose native language is other than English. It goes from pleasantries to helping them practice their English speaking skills. I also think saying, “Hi my friend” when entering their store or small business makes a difference. The other day, I visited my favorite diner in Brooklyn and a waiter, whom I haven’t seen in a long time, passed by my table. I tapped him on his arm and said, “Hi my friend, long time no see!” He gave me the biggest smile and said, “Hi, how are you?” He doesn’t speak much English but his smile alone made our brief exchange worthwhile. So much so that he gave me extra coffee. Smiling, like English is truly the universal language.

I’m a writer, and write all the time. I constantly buy notebooks or make notepads to jot down to-do lists, goals, or write down reflective moments. I also have a journal. My room is a post-it haven of notes (friends who visited my home knows this well)! I like to write something I call “Nightly reflection” on Facebook where I share thoughts, self-affirmations or something motivational that occurred during my day.

On a personal note, I’m a girlfriend to someone who I adore very much. Yet, I’m often called “spouse” or in his language Yoruba, “iyawo” which means “wife” to his friends and family. He is the reason I had the pleasure of traveling to his home, Nigeria. I visited Lagos, Nigeria last December. It was my first international experience, and an experience that truly changed my life in more ways than one. That is a story on its own, and I will certainly blog about it on a later post.

Year 2016 so far

I am constantly working on my art, from creating to research, to taking classes on how to market my work, and of course networking. I’ve taken a more serious approach in putting my art out there for the world to see. I believe if my artwork is being looked at and (hopefully) admired, I already won half the battle. I don’t have a sales background. I don’t know how to persuade someone to buy anything I make, but I hope my art will be good enough to sell itself. Free classes in sales and marketing definitely helps newbies like me. I love recycled art, taking used items and making them into decorative works of art. I love bottles and jars, whether glass or plastic, to paint and add accents to them. I like home dĂ©cor. I use these jars and bottles as vases, incense holders, storage for my hair brushes or pens, or leave it as it is. In February, I opened an online store with iCraftgifts.com. It’s called Dara Sunbubbles (http://icraftgifts.com/darasunbubbles.com). I sell my bottles and jars on the site. I plan to add more items in the coming weeks.

Doodle to design?

One of the challenges to being unemployed is boredom. I took out one of my handmade notepads (I made it from a cereal box and old computer paper) and started to doodle. From that point on, I continued drawing squiggly lines and dots. Each pattern is different. There is no previous sketch or idea, I just do it. And it is very relaxing. Ironically, I made my first doodle/design on April 24th of last year. I guess April is special for many reasons. I kept at it until I bought a sketchbook and continued to draw more of these lines and dots.

I came up with the name “squiggly lines, dots, and whatever else,” because in all my doodles there’s at least a squiggly line or dot within the pattern. I love doing it so much that I drew it on a t-shirt and button down shirt, ceramic dishes, created magnets, bookmarks, and mouse pads with the design on them. I love making the bottle and jar art, as well as my “squiggly lines, dots, and whatever else” design. I look forward to marketing them further.

Hopes and Personal Affirmation

I continue to grow as a woman, and hope to grow as a future entrepreneur. I hope my art and writing will take me to new heights. I have ideas on how to promote my work and remain true to my life’s goal which is to make a difference in this world. My affirmation to self is to remain strong, smile through the struggle, and not to lose faith. I remain in prayer which allows me to build confidence in self and in what I do. I welcome feedback and support from friends, family, and even strangers. I believe in any form of art, it’s a collective of ideas, interpretations, and opinions. There are no right or wrong answers, just guidance and pathways.
I want this blog to grow and reach more audiences, because I believe in the power of reflection. It takes people, experiences, emotions, happy and bad times, struggle, and so much more to make us become the people we are today, at this very moment. I’ve learned so much from so many people in my lifetime. From those who I am no longer in contact with or friends with, to those who are in my life currently, I learn something from my experiences with them. I look forward to learning more and gaining insight along this journey. I look forward to the near future.

New York City As of Late

Author’s note: This is an extension to my NYC Poetweet. The views expressed here are my own.

Let’s see, let’s see
What’s been going on in our city lately?
Subway fare hikes, nothing new
Update on 911 system is long overdue
Noise complaints goes unheard
Some of those courtesy ads are awkward
Potholes is still a driver’s nightmare
Still can’t afford a subway fare
Snow has left a mess on our sidewalks
Revamping garbage pickup is in the talks
Construction is happening without effort
What’s being done about those getting hurt?
Protests of injustice is seen all around
Many demonstrate by laying on the ground
Hurt and anger is an everyday occurrence
Trying to find strength through patience
The city is changing with businesses lost
Can no longer withstand the high rent costs
The vision of affordable housing is underway
People are losing their homes everyday
The City of New York is still an interesting place
Depends on how it’s viewed from one’s face

Remembrance

Sitting by the window
The clouds are thick and gray
Sounds of buses pass by
It’s another slow day
Table of empty plates and tea cups
Mind is quiet with nothing to contemplate
Another bus passes by
Its twelve minutes after eight
Rain begins to fall
As droplets hit against the window
Thoughts enter the quiet space
Traffic is moving by slow
Pictures hang on the walls
Memories of yesterday’s love
A smile forms on the face
Birds fly from the clouds above
Innocence is naĂŻve’s best friend
Heart guides the journey of feelings
Love effortlessly without sacrifice
Happiness comes from the simple things
Another hour passes as the rain falls
Eyes stare at their picture
Memories of yesterday’s love
The outside is now a blur

Messages

There are no stars in the sky’s dark blue
The incense fills the room of a smoky hue
Another night arrives as the candle burns
Read the messages of yesterday’s concerns
Poetic thought and imaginary stories
Complied together like a mini series
Still curious about the story within
That remains beneath tough skin
A desire to unfold a mystery
While trying to preserve their history
The messages that remain unsaid
Messages that are still waiting to be read

The Unpaved Path

Rain water puddles are the seagulls’ birdbath
While standing at the edge of the unpaved path
Jacket pocket is home to torn threads
Barely holding the notes of thoughts unread
Cold air hits the back of ears
Listening to the sound of many fears
Self-expression, the barring of one’s soul
Captured by a love that has no control

An enemy of the realistic present
Tortured by this strange attachment
Desire for the message to be heard
Felt, embodied, and read word-by word
Silence separates the connection of two
The grass along the path loses its dew
Seagulls fly away together as one
Cannot change what has already been done

Spring Air

It’s been a while since I posted here on the Creative Corner. I guess with any writer, there are those slow periods where one wonders what to write about or is suffering from writer’s block. For me, it was none of those reasons. I’ve been writing, a lot actually but for self mainly. I find it easier to write freely in my journal than online since it’s more personal, and I get to express myself exactly how I’m feeling at the moment. Some who read this may wonder then why I have a blog or writing a book. Good news. Some of those journal pages will be included in the book. Some things need to be said while some need to remain with me. I love to write. I love to express myself. I feel blessed that I get to do that anytime I want, whenever I want. I also find comfort in expressing self through art. Crafting not only allows me to try new projects or make a mess in my room, but to express feelings I am unable to do verbally or through written words. Colors have a way to show one’s emotions or message without doing much. It’s all interpretation and imagination.

A park
Painting is very relaxing to me and helps put my feelings into each stroke. I never ponder on what I’m going to paint, or what color scheme I plan to use. I just dip the paintbrush in and whatever happens, happens. When I cut cardboard, I release any frustrations I have and try not to cut self in the process. Once it’s cut, I feel relieved. Then the fun begins. When I make things out of cardboard, I am asked if I plan such projects. I usually don’t. In fact, I gain ideas when I am out taking a walk. Sometimes I am inspired by other people’s art, but most of the time I just look at a box and begin working without any plans. I don’t measure and never sketch out my creations. I just do it and the results speak for themselves. That’s how I like to live my life, just do it and whatever happens will happen. If a mistake is made, acknowledge it and start over. For the past (almost) 3 years, my life has been about starting over. I had to learn how to cope with it despite my stubbornness to hold on to what once was. I had to let go which is something I struggle with at times.

Spring is here and it is one of my favorite seasons. It’s not only the time when I was born, but it represents newness. It’s a very reflective time for me, because I turn a new age, I think about how far I’ve come, and what I want to do going forward. This is the first year I didn’t have any surgeries. I am happy I get to experience this season without any pending or reoccurring surgeries. However, my hip is still not in good shape. I have problems with balance, and continue to walk with a cane. Traveling via public transportation poses many challenges. Standing on crowded trains with its jerking motion is very uncomfortable and puts pressure on my hip and leg in general. Going up stairs isn’t easy and I have to take my time. The added frustration is constantly looking over your shoulder when people want to rush past you, push, or sneak up behind you. My fear is getting pushed down a flight of stairs. I fell down a flight of stairs when I was in high school. It was in the subway. Thankfully I only suffered from a sore face and broken glasses. I fell a lot during my adolescence. Taking the bus is okay since most of the time I get a seat or someone offers me one. I love to travel and try not to let my limitations hinder me from traveling, but it’s difficult and painful.

I don’t like to complain so I rarely talk about my challenges. I just pray that I will get from point A to point B without incident. However, I am aware of how I feel and taking important steps in dealing with this dilemma. Through hardship, one learns how to swallow their pride. Since I have a lot of pride, it is difficult to ask for help or seek resources that will help me. I quickly had to realize that if I don’t take care of self then I am in trouble. We only get one shot at life, and I want to make the best of it.

I am constantly working and looking for job opportunities. It’s been an incredibly slow process, and at times I want to put the resume away. I am focusing on creative ways to not only obtain employment, but to be my own employer. I am always writing and jotting down ideas and to-do lists. I am working on a draft for something that is not only of interest to me, but I believe will be an interest to others. At least that’s the goal. I am almost done with the book. I can’t wait to finish and pursue publication. The thought of having my happy face on the cover of my book on a bookstore’s shelf excites me. Socially, it is quiet. I try to meet up with friends when possible. I was recently asked if I am dating. I’m laughing as I write this. The answer is no, I am not dating anyone. I laugh, because that word is like a foreign language to me. I will always be interested in dating and relationships because I love to love. I cannot say when I’ll date or whether or not I’ll fall in love. That is truly out of my hands. I will share this tidbit. I would love to be loved by a man, and I’d love to love him. It’s that simple. I am waiting for that, and when those moments of “why am I still single” thoughts pop up, I yell out, “I don’t know, now leave me alone. I have cardboard to find!”

It’s fun to laugh at self sometimes. It takes away the sadness.

The journey continues one step at a time, literally!

Another Reflective Night: Happy New Year 2015

The reflection continues on this 15th day of January. It’s a quiet night. I’m doing my usual, listening to my favorite artist, Damien Rice, thinking, and writing. It’s a soothing experience. I tend to become melancholy at night. His music goes so well with my mood. It’s a new year, one that is off to a slow start. I don’t have any major updates to share except, I’ve been on an interview for an ESL teaching position. The wait continues. I am still crafting and hoping to get that off the ground; hoping to someday sell my items. I watched my favorite painter, Bob Ross on TV and he said something that really touched my soul. He said, and I am paraphrasing here, that “it’s not about the pocketbook,” but about someone wanting to buy something you made. He expressed how happy he felt when he sold his first painting for $20. It wasn’t the amount of money he cared about, it was the fact someone wanted something he made. It’s refreshing to know I am not alone in that sentiment. I never cared about money even when I taught. It was about the love for teaching, the love of creativity and expression.

That’s how I feel when I craft. It makes me happy. I am not perfect at it, who is anyway? However, I enjoy the ideas that come to mind and actually bringing it to life. That alone makes me smile, as well as my love for cardboard! Lately, collecting cardboard boxes have become a hobby. I use it for my crafts, and I am amazed by its versatility. The excitement is either finding it, or asking a store owner for it. I’ve made friends in the process, and met some folks who gave me strange looks. I don’t mind. I have pictures of my art on my phone just in case someone doesn’t believe me. I also like to explore new places and where there’s places there are stores. Stores get deliveries, they have cardboard. I’ve been lucky and now have various stores I can go to make such a request. In general, I like collecting stuff. Metrocards is part of that stuff.

Besides crafting and endless job hunting (which I hate, it’s one of the not-so-fun things to do), I write. As of late, I’ve been writing a lot but mainly for self. I haven’t felt inspired to share my inner thoughts with anyone. A sad reality for me lately is I am losing more people in my life than gaining. I had an argument with a dear friend before the holidays and now our friendship is over. Although, I felt we were growing apart, it’s still sad. I always feel bad losing a friend, especially if I’ve known them for years. Every time I trust someone enough to share my feelings, there’s some form of backlash. Sometimes it’s petty and sometimes it’s not, but when the trust is broken it hurts me. When I am hurt, I walk away. I rather do that than to argue. It’s not good for the spirit. I pray also. Prayer gives me strength. I do believe everything happens for a reason, and not everyone is meant to stay in your life. Although I understand that is a part of life, it still bothers me. I’m tired of getting hurt.

As 2015 entered, I celebrated with my family. We prayed and thanked God for allowing us to be together. I wished some friends a happy happy via text and social media. Soon after, I wrote out my goals for January on a dry erase board, wrote in my journal, and went to bed. I became sick after Christmas, so New Year’s Eve was a relaxing one. No partying for me, I drank ginger ale. I’m just now getting over whatever it was that was bothering me.

I don’t know where this journey is taking me. I often wonder about that. Sometimes, I feel I am grasping at air because I can’t obtain the things I need (and want). I am not healthy and doing what I can to change that. I strive to remain happy and motivated when at times I cannot see the light. I feel lost yet I’m stubborn and won’t give up. There are those days when sleeping late, watching silly comedies, and eating snacks is comforting. Then reality sets in. There’s work to do, things to create, inspirational stuff to read, and putting a smile on the face despite the tears trying to fall. I avoid looking at the mirror because I don’t feel beautiful right now. I look at pictures of how I was as motivation, a reminder that I can regain my life back. I just have to work harder, find a new path, pray more, and remain in faith. This is a hard journey, it’s real and I couldn’t fake it if I tried. Yet I am here and there is a reason for that. I am grateful as the journey continues.

Holiday Transitions

Paying my respects through creativity&love for deaths of 2 NYPD officers

This holiday season has had its ups and downs. With so many tragedies happening in the world and personal troubles, the Christmas season doesn’t feel so merry. Yet, this year has taught me to turn the bad into good to the best of my ability. I cannot control the world, but I can control me. It’s no secret that I haven’t been happy for some time, but I still feel 2014 was a good year. I learned a lot about myself, and embraced adulthood a little more. I cried when needed to, prayed, requested prayer from both friends and strangers, challenged self to be alone despite my struggle with loneliness, and let go of negative things and people. I made important decisions, and put me first above everything else. I put my feelings first, because I believe emotional/spiritual health is just as important as physical health. When one isn’t well, it affects other things. I made a promise to self to be more direct, honest, and loving to me. I also promised not to be afraid of the unknown, go with the flow, but don’t be taken advantage of or fooled by pretense. Instead, seek love and cherish it when it presents itself. Lastly, I am not concerned with other people’s opinions of me, my actions, or decisions. I learned that I have to live for Dara, because I only have this one time, this one chance at this journey called life.

School No More: Freedom!

I left grad school. This has was a surprise to the few people I shared this news with. I got to the last two weeks of the fourth semester and crashed. I couldn’t take it anymore, the papers, research, constant reading of texts, deadlines, and not feeling happy in the process. Sadly, I haven’t felt happy since the beginning of the second semester. I haven’t shared that with anyone afraid of judgment. I was passing all my classes with A’s, yet felt depressed. I felt all I was ever doing was school work. I’ve been in school since I graduated high school in 1999. I love to learn, and appreciate the experience. However, the process feels the same. I don’t like it anymore, at least the way I have been going about it. I know what I want to study and pursue. I impulsively pursued the Master’s in Human Services believing that is what I wanted to study. I was inspired by my volunteer work during Hurricane Sandy in 2012-13. I felt that was the field for me. I still like human services, but I really want to teach. I really want to be back into my career of adult education/ESL. I withdrew from school December 9th.  Since then, I feel a sense of relief and joy. I feel I can now put my focus on my creativity and finding my way back to the classroom. Ironically I still passed my class without completing the final assignment. I don’t regret this decision. I won’t apologize for it.

People

I am building friendships with people still new in my life while trying to establish new ones. Every year I lose or move on from old friendships. There are many reasons for this, too many to get into here. I used to be bothered by it, but now I appreciate the experience. I believe everything happens for a reason. Some people aren’t meant to stay in your life, sometimes the paths must go in different directions. I always like to move forward on good terms with people who I am no longer friends with or in communication with. If that happens, I smile. If not, I still smile knowing I have no animosity towards that individual (s). The current friendships I have I appreciate and hope will remain throughout New Year 2015. As for love, I am ready to explore that option in the New Year. I still love who I love and will keep that door open if it’s meant. However, I am ready to make myself available for any admirers. I think the process has already begun. I feel it’s a sign, a reminder from above that I am pretty and I do get noticed. It is a nice feeling for sure. Let’s see what happens as time progress. I am patient and in no rush to be in a committed relationship, but one can start the process right?

Creativity

The goal for New Year 2015 is to fully explore, enhance, and embrace my creativity on all levels. There are so many projects I put aside, so many ideas I’ve written down that I’m ready to bring to the forefront. I want my book published, my art to be seen, and continue capturing my love for nature, for art through the lens. I want my creative bubble to shine!

I am continuing to work on me. I am truly a process and life is a journey. I hope to be here for many more years to come and walk on more paths. I consider myself an adventurer, one who likes to travel, see and experience new things, and capture the moment one picture, one step at a time. I look forward to another year, to an improved me.

Holiday time

I wrote this on Facebook on Saturday, November 29, 2014: A holiday reflection: I may not have
much, but I'm here and have family who loves me. And I have some folks who care about my big head as I care about theirs, haha! It's holiday time. I'm not traditional, that ended after my late grandma went on to heaven. Turkey is cool but I prefer chicken and I love my mother's stuffing. I only have 3 members of family unless you count an uncle who I'm not close to. So we don't do the big family dinners, or have the biggest turkey, and there's no company who stops by. It's just us in our humble home, comfortable. I am poor financially but rich in spirit. For that, I am thankful as I continue to reflect silently and pray for continued peace. That's my story. Until the next time.

Holiday time has different affects on me. Depending on the holiday, I could feel at my happiest or at my worst. Thanksgiving is a holiday I tend to feel melancholy. It was my late grandmother’s favorite holiday, and she really made it special. Her cooking alone was divine, and the way she prepared the house was beautiful. Although I didn’t know many of my relatives, having everyone there was nice. After she passed away, Thanksgiving haven’t been the same. My mom tried to continue the tradition but it wasn’t the same. Many of my relatives were dying, and the few left moved away or we lost contact. Family for me is unique. I wasn’t close to many of my relatives. Sadly, many of them didn’t like me for reasons I still don’t know. The few I knew were okay, I think they tolerated me. After a while, I stopped caring and focused on making friends. My friends became my family. This is the same case now as an adult, except I don’t have many friends. Most of them have moved on, or I have moved on. Some friends are more like associates. We have different lives going in different directions. So I guess I don’t have much of a family in both relative and friendship department. I am grateful for my parents and brother. They are all I got. My wish is to someday be married. Maybe his family will become mine, and together we will be a family. I would like to know what that’s like. Being single is hard at times, especially as I get older. I long to be loved and to love. I want a relationship, not just random dating. I want to be a wife someday.

Christmas time I love the most. It’s my favorite time of year, because of its spiritual meaning, its sparkle and lights. I feel festive. I’ve had nice Christmases, and I hope to have a nice one this year. It’s the one time of the year that even if things aren’t perfect, I still want to celebrate the holiday. I make my own fun. This year is special because it’s the 1 year anniversary of my second hip surgery. Although my hip still hurts and at times gives me trouble, I am thankful I don’t need another surgery. I can walk and I will always be grateful for that. This year was a good year overall. I accomplished a lot of personal goals, and I’m doing well in grad school. I am in my 4th semester. The class I’m taking is Leadership and Organizational Behavior. It’s difficult and so is my professor. I can appreciate the challenge. By God’s grace I am passing with A’s on my papers and honestly I am surprised. There are only 3 more weeks before the semester ends. I could use the mini break before the new term begins in January.

I am looking forward to New Year 2015. My goal is to be working in the New Year. I want to have my book published; I am almost done with the manuscript, yay! I also want to buy new clothes and learn how to drive. It’s during holiday time when I become reflective and make decisions. I write my end of year to-do lists, and set goals for self. The most important thing for me currently and in the future is to be comfortable, happy, and at peace. I care about that the most.

Everyday

Through pictures, I tell a story.

Every day there’s something to be seen, something to discover. I am discovering self.

Some mornings I don’t want to get up. There are some days I just want to go by without experiencing it. Then tomorrow arrives. I wake up, say my prayers, and drink tea. I pick up the camera, the motivation, the notebook, my cane, and head out. I walk. I look up to the sky. The sun welcomes me as I take its picture. The day begins. I travel by mood. I go wherever the mind leads me, the sun is my guide.

Appointments arise, interviews pop up and I go to each. I wait in the waiting room staring out at the window. I admire the view. My name is called as I enter a room. The process happens. I enter an office telling the receptionist who I am. She tells me to have a seat. I am greeted, shake hands, and enter another room. The conversation begins. For both experiences, I walk away feeling melancholy. I observe the new surroundings. I take a few pictures. The train station is different. I capture the train arrival as I wonder where to go next. The future lies within this city, somewhere in this city I no longer know.

I arrive at the cafĂ©, buy a latte, and sit at the bar. I pull out the notebook and begin to write. I write words that are within me. I have no control. The latte soothes me as music plays in the background. The sweet smell of coffee elevates the senses. Someone sits next to me, looks over at what I’m doing. I ignore the person. My shyness consumes me. I continue to write. Somehow I want to hide between the lines of the notebook paper to escape reality. There I can find shelter. Shelter from the emotional turmoil, this repetitive cycle of travel, schedules, appointments, meetings, exchange of information, discussion, applications, waiting and more waiting. The end result is the same. The situation remains. I stop writing. The latte is now cold as I take the last sip.

I walk outside and look up to the sky. I take a deep breath. The sun begins to set. I take a picture. I go home and reflect just to do it all over again tomorrow.
