Walking into a new place

Not sure what I’m about to face

Receive the assignment for the day

Do not mind working without pay

Feelings of distress, room smells like smoke

Fire destroys lives, takes away hope

Paper processing, lots of frustration

Sad to see this happen so often

Voices crack, eyes become watery

Try to answer questions, listen to their story

Responsible to explain the next step

Intake is a challenge, one I gladly accept

Take notes, be an observer

Learning how to be an effective caseworker

Gain experience and develop new skills

Someday this will help pay some bills

Love helping others, this my future career

Very proud to be an American Red Cross volunteer!
